Thousands Take Advantage of SCCPSS's Student Success Expo & STEAM Festival

Dr. Denise Watts: I aspire for all of our students to have choice-filled lives.

Dr. Dionne Hoskins-Brown: Here you get to learn what is available throughout the district and you learn the pathways to get there.

Ken Slats: And around 10,000 students and parents took advantage of the 16th annual Student Success Expo and Steam Festival at Savannah's Civic Center.

Roger Moss: This is the beginning of being world class. It's a great recruitment for people who may have not looked into public education before. And they find all while they're addressing what my child wants.

Dr. David Bringman: Each parent here today is learning about all the opportunities that their children can have an arts district outside of an excellent education.

Tess Tvrdy: Not only are you getting a choice in your education, which makes you more invested in your own education, but number two, you get to focus on some of the things that you have, interests.  You'll explore even later as an adult.

Dr. David Bringman: These choice programs just allow our students that extra advantage. Outside of our core classes of math, English, science.

Ken Slats:  And social studies. It's specialties or pathways that are developed at an earlier age than in the past.

Amy Perry: We spend a lot of time with our elementary and middle school students, helping them kind of know what their interests are and know what career path they may want to go into. And then we have choice programs all around our district that they can apply, to go through all the way from elementary through high school. We have 26 choice programs.

Dr. Denise Watts: And certainly here you get a menu of choices here in Savannah, Chatham County Public school system. Just an excellent opportunity to be able to think about what you want in, in terms of your education and to pursue that through various avenues here in our school district.

Dr. Dionne Hoskins-Brown: I just got to talking to some students at Savannah Early College who were very, very clear about the value of their program. His goals and how they had been shaped by his experience of Savannah Early College. That's the kind of thing that makes this so rewarding as a school board member.

Roger Moss: Depending on what, a child's interest is. We've got something for them.

Dr. Denise Watts: You will see. This is the place where futures are built and excellence thrives.

Ken Slats:  Another success expo helping guide the choices students and parents alike have at SPSS. I'm Ken Slats, reporting.
